When he produced his first photographs of the Normandie for Harper’s Bazaar during the winter of 1934–1935, Morel could not have predicted that his career would become so closely linked to the famous ship. The young photographer was a popular reporter whose photographs expressed France’s sense of freedom and carefree spirit during the interwar period. First recruited by the famous American fashion magazine in 1934, he was on the maiden voyage of the Normandie as well as on another voyage in 1939 for a report funded by the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique and published in the brand-new Match magazine.
